Gymnema the Future Treatment of Diabetes 1 & 2
As we all know that Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels due to a lack of or inadequate supply of insulin, an inability of the body to use insulin correctly, or both known as Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2.
Now let’s see what is gymnema?
Gymnema is a supplement that has been used as a complementary treatment for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. While it isn’t a replacement for insulin, it may aid in blood sugar control.
It’s been used medicinally in ayurveda for over 2,000 years. Chewing on the leaves of this plant can temporarily interfere with the ability to taste sweetness. It’s generally considered safe for adults to take.
Gymnema has been used to:
lower blood sugar
reduce the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines
lower LDL cholesterol
stimulate insulin release in the pancreas
It is also sometimes used to treat stomach problems, constipation, liver disease, and water retention.
How does Gymnema work for diabetes?
Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.
In One study looked at the effectiveness of GS4, which is an extract from the Gymnema sylvestre leaves, in the management of hyperglycemia. The study investigated 22 patients with type 2 diabetes, and 27 people with type 1. These patients were also taking regular oral medications to control their diabetes. GS4 was given to each of the study’s participants at 400 milligrams per day, for 12 to 15 months. Each participant was on both – the supplement and the conventional anti-diabetic drug.
During GS4 supplementation, these participants showed decreased fasting blood glucose levels, hemoglobin A1c levels and glycosylated plasma protein levels. The supplement was so successful that five participants from the study were able to stop their conventional drug treatment. It was noted that they were able to maintain normal levels of glucose and hemoglobin A1c even after their conventional treatments were discontinued.
By Adding Gymnema sylvestre to your diabetic diet regimen can help you control your blood sugar levels. It is possible that the consumption of Gymnema sylvestre may even prevent prediabetics from becoming diabetic, further research is needed on this.
The best way to consume a natural herb is through its decoction in warm water. You can pour a cup of boiling water over the leaves of Gymnema to make tea. Cover and steep it for ten to fifteen minutes before drinking it.
Other tea leaves, such as green tea, can be added for taste. The combined effect could even help with weight loss. It is not advisable to take Gymnema sylvestre tea on an empty stomach as it may a cause mild upset stomach.
